Name that tool!
Jumping on the mystery tool bandwagon, here are just a few of the strange tools that I have in my garage (excuse my french, I meant “car hole”).
1. This first one is pretty easy. I recently used it when I replaced the trans in my wife’s suburban (to be blogged later).

2. Now this one below is a bit harder. It’s about 18″ long.
Here’s a close up, that 1/4″ x 1″ bolt should probably be a thumbscrew. If you squeeze it to compress the spring, you can slide it along the rod. You might use this while doing a tuneup on a car.

3. Now we get to the impossible. Hell, I didn’t know what it was until I looked up the patent number.

It might get used during a home improvement project.

It’s made of aluminum, not that that helps. If anyone can guess that last one, I’ll make something and send it to them (a wrought iron thing or something painted with flames or what ever) as a prize.

Hmmmm…
#1 - A wrench (thing) that you use to hold the ring gear on the flywheel/flexplate while unbolting it?
#2 - Obviously a mechanic’s cigar holder. To use you simply stab the bottom part into a convenient vacuum hose or fuel line, then adjust the height of the holder to your preference (try to adjust so as to avoid potentially dropping burning cigar embers into puddling fuel), then rest your stogie in the little cradle thing.
#3 - Well, we used to call that a “Babbitter”, but I’m not sure what you might call it. It was used to adjust and/or remove the Babbitt thing. Let me know what *you* think it is and I’ll tell you if I’m right.
Let me know where to send my address for my prize.
Cheers,
Ed T.

#1 is correct, its used for turning/holding a flexplate (I’ve got a pic of it in use for an upcoming post about a 700r4 swap).
#2 Sorry, this thing is used inside the car while you are working outside
#3 Not even close. Remember my hint, home improvement.

Okay, are you *SURE* about # 2? Okay, okay how about these:
#2 - lever to keep gas pedal depressed or lever to hold clutch pedal at optimum height for adjustment or brake bleeder-helper?
#3 - Paintbrush holder (the long part would fit into some kind of extension thing and the brush handle would fit into the slot while the metal-banded part of the brush would fit into the cup thing, supporting the brush on the upstroke).
Okay, I haven’t a clue and I’ll stop polluting your comment section with my stoopid guesses. I’ve tagged your RSS because now I just HAVE to know!!
Cheers,
Ed T.
