‘89 sportster: new regulator

October 5, 2005

With plenty of evidence from my rigged up volt meter that I needed a new regulator (that, and my headllight blew out, again, for the 6th time in 18 months) I finally installed it last weekend. First I unbolted it.

Then I cut the nylon ties holding the wires to the frame and pried back the metal clips doin the same. There was a two prong plug under the trans.

The manual says to detach the last wire from a relay, but there’s a bunch under the seat. The new regulator has a black wire and a blue transparent crimp on connector.

Looking at the relays I find the most likely candidate.

Then it was just fishing the new wire up and replacing the bolts and cable ties. The battery has been charging at a very steady 14.5V for the past couple days, so that was the problem.
