Buffing and polishing Stainless Hardware

October 25, 2005

I needed some bolts to attach the brake master cylinder bracket to my trike project. I like using stainless instead of chrome because I’ve had to replace lots of rusted chrome. I start with an ordinary sst bolt.

First I use the side of a grinding wheel to remove the raised letters.

Then I sand with some 320 grit paper to remove the grinding marks.

I hold the mating nylok nut by screwing it on a longer bolt.

I use Dico E5 emery to load a cotton buff wheel (seen above). Its not as nice a multi step (increasely fine grits) buff, but its good enough for bolt that’s only seen from a distance.
