A charging station for cordless stuff.

March 29, 2006

I have found that a lot of chargers (makita, cell phone, camera) draw electricity even when they’re not charging. You can actually feel the makita charger vibrating. Plus they are all disorganized and scattered about the house. So I thought I would make a charging station on a shelf where all the chargers would be in one place and they would be individually switched. I started to put something together out of light switches and outlets, but the whole time I was wishing that I had my old switch box for my computer. I just finally threw it out a couple months ago, so of course now I could really use it (I’ll never throw anything away again). So, halfway into the project, I find an identical switch box at the flea market (for $4, about what I paid new in 1992).

It’s nearly perfect, lighted switches for 5 outlets and a master. But it is kind of big, it’s made to have a monitor sit on it. So I decided to cut it down. Its mostly empty inside.

I scribed two lines and cut it with my nibblers (great tool).

Now I just need to cut down the top.

The top need a little extra work, it had a flange on the back that covered the edge of the bottom. So I left it long, notched the corners, and then used those sheet metal pliers to bend it.

Next time, assembly and mounting.
